Expectations
A rest day at Old Croft House in Kirkby Stephen.
This is where we ended the 2014 walk. Then, I felt wistful looking east toward the Pennines and wishing we were keeping on going. Hope I feel that way this time too!!!
Expecting a truly lazy day since I don’t think there’s much to explore compared to our rest days in Grasmere and Richmond.
Realities
Ha! So much for the lazy day idea…6 miles walked. Turns out, there is a lot to explore here.
Side note for anyone planning a C2C itinerary: I recommend avoiding Sunday as the rest day in Kirkby Stephen. Half the stores are shut on Sundays, including both outdoor stores and the pharmacy. Makes for a less than ideal re-stocking stop.
We started out with laundry. 14 GBP later (about $20) we had done our laundry. Lesson learned–we should have accepted the last lodging’s offer to do laundry for 6 GBP!
Had coffee with RL and CL.
Then headed out on a 4 miles loop exploring the “Eden Viaducts”. Half of the route went along the Eden river. We passed the iconic Frank’s Bridge and C2C signpost
Stopped twice to send up the drone, the second time at an amazing double bridge over rapids. Drone footage below!
Then along the disused train track (same track as yesterday, just further east) including two more impressive viaducts.
Then back via the iconic C2C sign.
And a stop for light lunch at the Pink Geranium. Interesting roof!
We explored menus at three different eating places, settling eventually on the Kings Arms for 7pm. Photos to follow!
Final note for the day: this lamp in our room needs a good shave!
