The plan
13.6 miles\764m ascent\average grade 7%\4:49 hours of easy-then-strenuous, ending at Corfingle House (Cs) and Carradale (Ls).
Reality
Today was the day that compromise seriously kicked in. It was hot (only 76 as the official high, but the sun was searing and it was quite humid) and both M and I suffered a mild food poisoning type of thing on the rest day yesterday. There was just a general sense that walking 13.6 miles today was not on the cards. We took the ferries–as planned–from Falmouth to St Mawes and St Mawes to Place, then walked from there to Portscatho and got a taxi to Portloe. This cut the mileage down to around 7.
Back to the start of the day–a definite haziness to the view from Seaview Inn this morning. More moisture in the air already:
We met up with the Ls and Mark & Alistair at the ferry dock. A ferry slightly larger than the previous two took us over to St Mawes. Nice ride, surrounded by people messing about in boats.
We had a drink and a snack in St Mawes, knowing there would be nothing else until Portscatho 6.5 miles and a ferry ride away.
Second, shorter ferry took us to Place (what a name!), a tiny hamlet consisting of just a house and church as far as we could tell. Then onward around St Anthony’s Head, which was beautiful in its own right, even without the spectacular views back toward Falmouth.
Once we left the relative shelter of the head, it got hotter.
Greatly relieved to reach the Plume & Feathers in Portscatho around 2pm. We had refreshments and then sought out a way to get from there to Portloe without having to walk.
Eventually we were picked up in an 8-seat van by a local character who bemoaned Trump, the EU, and all forms of government. Quite a journey! Glad to get to Portloe, find out lodgings, get freshened up and settle into the Ship Inn for a fun and delicious evening.
See the change in the sky as we left the pub? Moisture moving in for tomorrow! Yay!
