The plan
Walk 7.4 strenuous miles\575m ascent\average grade 10%\2:45 hours from Mevagissey to Charlestown, the bus onward to Fowey. The Well House (Cs) and The Ship Inn (Ls). As mentioned yesterday, Eden Project and Lost Gardens of Heligan may be within range.
Reality
Maybe I always knew that today wouldn’t actually be a walking day? Though it wasn’t a “visit gardens” day either. The Ls discovered that there’s a ferry that travels between Mevagissey and Fowey. After reading that the coast path takes a perverse delight in going up and down on this section, our combined weariness made the ferry too tempting.
So we had a slow start, taking the 11:45 ferry out of Mevagissey. I was expecting an entertaining ride like some of the tiny ferries have been, but this was purely transportation. We arrived at about 12:20. Miraculously, both sets of lodgings were immediately available, so we could rest up after all the exertions of the morning (ha!)
Beautiful sunrise at 5:37am:
And a lovely breakfast…
The small white and red boat backing away from the quay is the 10am ferry to Fowey. We took the next one at 11:45am.
Although the weather looks OK in those photos, it was actually grey with off-and-on light rain much of the day. Wasn’t a photogenic boat ride. As mentioned before, we could check straight into our room at the medieval low-headroom Well House
After our rest, we had a wander around town, including this view back out to sea.
We’ll cross this river outlet tomorrow morning via a very short ferry. Unless we decide to cheat and get a ride to Polperro and walk on from there! Are we losing the plot? 🙂
