The plan
11.75 miles\794m ascent\average grade 8%\4:19 hours of strenuous-then-easy walking to Honeycombe House (Cs) and Buckingham House (Ls). If we decide not to walk or leave late tomorrow or whatever, we could divert off to Lost Gardens of Heligan or the Eden Project.
Reality
A good day’s walking, in some heavy rain initially but then clearing.
One note about our B&B in Portloe. Really charming place, with a lovely host. But both rooms had en suite bathrooms that lacked a door. Lying in the bed in our double room, you got a clear and close view of the toilet. We’ve been married a looooong time, but that’s STILL not something either of us is comfortable with! So we took it in shifts, hanging out on the landing if the other needed the restroom. Just to make it even more uncomfortable, the shower in M’s room had no hot water, so he had to use our shower in the same door-less room.
Looking back at cosy Portloe…
Dave bagging his cell phone…
Nice to have some inland walking for a change.
I think this is Caerhays Castle, built in the early 1800s but at such cost that it bankrupted the overlay ambitious aristocrat. Beautiful setting. We had a snack at a beach cafe here.
We decided to re-name Dodman Point. New name: Dodman Pointless. We took a shortcut, content to have seen plenty of coastline and feeling no need to climb or walk to the end of the point. This photo is looking back toward the beach where we started our rather pleasant cheat.
We had a nice pause at Gorran Haven for a small lunch. 7 miles in, 3 to go.
Our first view toward Mevagissey–the harbor wall right of center in this photo. Portmellon is the settlement on the left.
Unusually green beach at Portmellon…
Our B&B was Honeycombe House. Far and away my favorite so far. Look at that view! This would have made a superb rest day location–not only our own balcony but also a communal lounge area so there are plenty of options for resting. Oh, and the en-suite had a door 🙂
We met up with the Ls for dinner at the somewhere or other. Honestly, I’m losing track!!!!
Then a stroll back through the working harbor. Beautiful.
