Expectations
The first two-thirds of the flat farmland trek across the Vale of Mowbray. Not sure if we’ll join Wainwright in being underwhelmed by this part (and overwhelmed by cattle!) or whether we’ll delight in the easier walking and pastoral views.
I’m sure we’ll notice the extra miles, even though it’s flat! 14.13 miles from Arandale Guest House in Richmond to Ashfield House/The Old School House Danby Wiske
Realities
Good breakfast, slightly toned down British dry humor! We said goodbye to Paul, the host, and headed into Richmond to grab some food to eat later for lunch.
Easy walk right from the start….14.55 miles, so very long, but a pathetic 271ft of elevation gain for the entire day! That might be just from bobbing up and down while walking 🙂
Saw our first flock of self-herding sheep…
Then on the amber waves of grain. Just stunning in the sunlight. Totally see where the Rumpelstiltskin story came from.
We endured the roadwork diversion around the new road over the A1(M) at Catterick. Unpleasant walk along a busy A road.
Looks like the construction crew stumbled upon a Roman something-or-other, and the archaeologists were busy surveying the site.
FL stopped at Brampton-on-Swale and got a taxi the rest of the way. We continued on until we found a nice place for lunch and a drone flight.
After about 8 miles or so, we arrived at Bolton-on-Swale–delightful village.
The church offered refreshments…
Which we gratefully accepted in return for a donation.
Then onward. Signposts are getting more plentiful finally.
This field was notable for the stalks being very blue. Doesn’t really come across in the photo unfortunately.
For some reason, I thought today was an 11 mile day, a myth I shared with everyone at the start of the day. So the last 3 miles were rather a trudge, reinforced by a lot of today being on roads–minor roads with almost no traffic, but hard on the feet anyway.
We were SO happy to see Danby Wiske, settling on the village green outside the pub for a drink.
After showers etc, back to the pub for dinner. We all loved the title of this book…
And marveled at the singular focus of the rest of the reading material…
Best steak pie yet, by the way.
Tomorrow should be similar walking but shorter. I hope!
