The plan
11.5 miles\462m ascent\average grade 5%\4:09 hours of moderate walking, ending at Seiners Hotel
Reality
11.4 miles–awfully close! Would have been a straightforward day without the stinking heat!
We had a disturbed night because our room was hot, so we had the window open facing a noisy road, and had a fan oscillating over us all night. Not the best. Other than that, I rather liked St Bernard’s Guest House. Lovely host and great breakfast.
Left as usual around 9am and walked to a suitable drone-launching spot in Newquay:
Might actually upload the drone video at a suitably fast internet connection–it was a good one!
Then onwards…
One of the endless beaches we walked across. This one was still in Newquay, and was notably less lovely than most of them. Yet still popular..
Crossing over the Gannel was an adventure. Way too low tide for the ferry, but perfect for the low-tide-only footbridge…
Super hot by now. The village we were heading for was Holywell. but (especially trudging through the dunes) I confess we referred to it as Holy Hell quite frequently…
Redeemed itself at the pub…
Then on past military installations to the extraordinary Perranporth Beach, 2 miles long! We just made it in time to be able to walk the entire beach. Half an hour later and the tide would have forced us up to the hot dunes.
Here’s a photo of the only cloud in Cornwall!
Then on to Seiner’s Hotel, the blue building below:
When I came to take my socks and sboes off in the room, I discovered I have a nasty blistering rash around my ankles and up my lower legs. What the heck! Rather painful. I went to Boots but the pharmacist had no ideas. He gave me a generic healing cream, which I’ve put on one leg to see if it makes any difference. If not better in the morning, I will need to find a doctor to take a look.
ADDENDUM
Our room looks across the bay. “Sea view”…sounds so lovely. Except we overlook a concert venue. Luckily the music isn’t too bad–rhythm and blues. Less luckily, the concert goes till 11pm AND THE AFTER PARTY GOES TO 1:30AM!!!!!
And it’s another warm night so the windows need to be open. Holy Hell.
